COMMENT:

I can't tell you how happy I am to get to define a shape using those two magical words "Panel" and "Billiard", and that is mainly for the former word. Though a Panel Billiard is a well-established and recognized classic shape, you rarely find it these days. I know that some makers, such as Ashton, continue to make it. I just wish we saw it more often. This pipe here is fabulously elegant, and I personally wish it were straight (so that I could add to my private collection)! Here are few more measurements to help you imagine you have the pipe in your hands: (1) Bowl height: 47.5mm (1.87"), (2) Bowl diameter: 38-41mm (1.5-1.61"), (3) Shank length: 39mm (1.54"), and (4) Overall pipe length: 140mm (5.51").I would compare the tobacco chamber capacity to that of a Dunhill Group 4.

COMMENT:

You might want to take a different approach to defining the shape here by preferring to use the term "Freeform Apple"; I personally would not mind that at all. I just think that the term "egg" is both intriguing and more expressive in this situation. Notice that Spanu decided to flatted the bowl top, instead of continuing with the basic rounded shape of the rest of the bowl. The thin briarwood shank insert provides a bit of visual transition from the light color of the lemon wood to the transparent, amber-like color of the mouthpiece. Here are a few more measurements: (1) Bowl height: 49mm (1.93"), (2) Bowl diameter: 42mm (1.65"), (3) Shank length: 34mm (1.39"), and (4) Overall pipe length: 137mm (5.39").I would compare the tobacco chamber capacity to that of a Dunhill Group 5.

COMMENT:

There is no doubt in my mind that the only way to describe this shape is by resorting to the illusive term "Freehand". Believe me, I have squeezed my brains to a pulp trying to find a more accurate definition, but I strongly believe that the pipe is indeed so unique in it design that to do it justice I have to go with "Freehand". I hope that the angles at which I took the middle pictures manage to show you why this shape is one-of-a-kind. What I can tell you with certainty is that the pipe is extra large in size, and let me give you a few extra measurements. The bowl is 61mm (2.4") in height and 47mm (1.85") in diameter, the shank is 38mm (1.5") in length, and the total length of the pipe (with the mouthpiece in place) is 149mm (5.87"). I absolutely love the wonderful Bird's Eye that is all over the bowl top, followed by a touch of Flame Grain which must have been the dominant grain pattern because the cork layer was added. I find the overall weight of the pipe more than reasonable considering the extra large size. The pipe, in addition, feels so well balanced in the hand, and if you choose to clench on it, I'm sure that you will be able to do so comfortably and with no compromises.

COMMENT:

I full-heartedly hope that you can see, and understand, why I had to use the term "Freehand" to define this shape. Yes, I do realize that it is possible to push it a little and define the shape along some standard lines, but I simply don't think it would be fair to the pipe (or even accurate, from a technical point of view). I also hope that the pictures managed to show you what this is a unique shape. The tobacco chamber is quite conical in shape, which should facilitate the tobacco combustion. Here are a few more measurements: (1) Bowl height: 49mm (1.93"), (2) Bowl diameter: 47mm (1.85"), (3) Shank length: 35mm (1.38"), and (4) Overall pipe length: 144mm (5.67").I would compare the tobacco chamber capacity to that of a Dunhill Group 4-5.
