Once again, Frank Burla and his Chicagoland team managed to give the international pipe community an incredible show, deemed by many the best ever. The Chicago Pipe Show 2004 brought together pipe smokers, collectors, makers, retailers, distributors, journalists, etc., from all walks of life and from over 35 different countries. The 277 exhibitor tables were all sold out a long time before the show date even started approaching, and the Pheasant Run Resort was stretched to its full capacity with more than 1,200 nights booked only for the show participants.

One of the most evident facts of the show this year was "the great comeback of the Italian makers", as stated by many of the show participants. Indeed, there was the largest Italian presence in recent years, with makers such as Bruto Sordini, Luigi Radice, Baldo Baldi, Maurizio Tombari, Paolo Becker, Luigi Viprati, Bonfiglioli, among others. This is the one of the main reasons why this show was a dream come true for me personally; I had been trying for years to talk as many Italian pipe makers as possible into coming to the show, and I finally managed to achieve that goal, at least partially.

I hope this report, and others, will convince more Italian pipe makers to put the Chicago Pipe Show 2005 on their agenda.

My heart-felt thanks to Luca Di Piazza (
