Italian Flag InfoWell: Unique Pipes
Don Carlos Cum Corde 2000

If you have a pipe you think can be added to this part of the site, please send me a message with a photo. Thank you.

It has become a tradition for Bruto and Rosaria Sordini and I to launch an auction towards the end of each year and donate the funds generated to charity. The pipe you see here is one of those pipes offered on auction over the past few years and since the launch of this site.

COMMENT:

The Cum Corde 2000 is a wonderful combination of simplicity in design, precision in craftsmanship and beauty of briar. The bowl is that of a Dublin, with a plateau top. What sets it apart from classic Dublin is the long shank and the short saddle mouthpiece. However, there is a lot more to it than that. Look carefully how the bowl base is shaped and how the bowl and shank majestically join each other. The grain is a big winner in all this. As you can see, it's fabulous straight grain. What I really like is that the grain on the shank reflects that on the bowl: straight on the side and bird's eye on the top and base. One of the first things that caught my eye was the fact that the diameter of the mouthpiece is surprisingly smaller than that of the shank. I honestly thought it was a mistake. No. Bruto explained to me that he's done that deliberately, since he knew it would create a particularly unique effect. And it did! I also find the plateau top extremely uniform, tight and attractive.
The presentation case has been made of quality briar, especially for the pipe. The lid exhibits gorgeous bird's eye.
